FCC completes the road extension of the second section of the Carretera Interamericana in Costa Rica

On Friday 11 March, the second road section of the Carretera Interamericana, constructed by FCC for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Costa Rica, was opened to traffic.
This section, measuring approximately 25 km in length, passes between the communities of Bagaces and Liberia, located in the northeast of the country, and completes the 5.4 km section that was opened in December 2015. It includes the construction of the primary and secondary interchanges in the communities of Bagaces, Barrio La Cruz, Liberia and Colegio Laboratorio.
Work on the remaining section under construction is expected to be completed this forthcoming April. It will bring to an end the road project that involves the restoration of 50.3 km of the existing two-lane road, extending it to four lanes (two in both directions).
The main work activities carried out included the construction of embankments for the two new lanes, adaptation and extension of the drainage system, and the restoration and construction of the road surface with hydraulic concrete. The work carried out on this section also included the construction and installation of facilities such as bus bays, pedestrian footbridges and pavements, bike lanes, animal paths and road signage.
The restoration of the Carretera Interamericana Norte Cañas-Liberia will boost the competitiveness of the country in terms of product transportation and will reduce journey times between the capital and the Pacific Coast.
