FCC Construcción begins installing the oversized beams on the Industrial Bridge (Chile)

FCC Construcción has begun installing the seven inmense  beams on the Los Batros viaduct as part of the project to build the Industrial Bridge over the Bio Bio River. This constitutes progress on the Industrial Bridge in what will be a notable improvement, when completed, in connectivity to the south of the Bio Bio. The project is currently 73% complete and upon completion will become the longest bridge in Chile and the fourth to cross the Bio Bio River. Once in operation, it will be the first urban motorway concession outside the Metropolitan Region.

The project will improve connectivity in the Greater Concepción area, favouring commercial exchange through local ports and contributing to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

The project consists of a 6.5 kilometre long highway connecting Route 160 in San Pedro de la Paz at Puente Los Batros with Avenida Costanera in Hualpén, via a bridge across the Biobío River.

The project is divided into three sectors:

  • Sector A (north of the Industrial Bridge), connects the flows of the communes of Concepción, Talcahuano, Hualpén and San Pedro de la Paz.
  • Sector B is the industrial bridge itself. It consists of a long structure that connects both banks of the Biobío River and crosses the Los Batros estuary. It has an extension of 2,520 metres.
  • Sector C (south of the Industrial Bridge) is a link connecting the new motorway with Route 160.

The project has an Environmental Qualification Resolution, where there are mitigation measures associated with the protection of flora, fauna and cultural heritage and mitigation measures related to the community in the area of direct influence. It also has voluntary commitments. It has worked actively with the community of the communes involved, through regular meetings.
