FCC in Joint Venture awarded Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations progressive DB contract development contract signed for the construction of the Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations of the Ontario Line (Canada)

  • FCC in joint venture to develop and deliver the "Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations” section of the Ontario Line, the new rapid transit line that will run through the City of Toronto .
  • The contract is being delivered using a "Progressive Design-Build" model, an innovative contract model under which the owner(s) and development partners have an opportunity to work more collaboratively to develop design, reduce risk and finalize pricing before project implementation.

 

FCC gana el contrato de construcción del Túnel Pape y Estaciones de Metro de la Línea Ontario (Canadá)

FCC Construcción Canadá has won a new contract to develop sustainable mobility in Canada. FCC Canada Ltd. (“FCC Canada”), in a 50/50 joint venture, with Webuild Civil Works Inc. (“Webuild”) has signed an agreement to deliver the Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations section of the Ontario Line. This is one of many contracts to deliver the Ontario Line, a 15.6-kilometre stand-alone rapid transit line that will connect the Eglinton Crosstown LRT (Line 5) at Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue, northeast of the city, to Exhibition Place, in the southwest, with 15 stations along the way.

The new line will provide more than 40 connections to other subway, bus, streetcar, light-rail transit and regional rail services. This segment of the project is being delivered using a Progressive Design-Build (PDB) model. Key features of a PDB model include the opportunity for greater collaboration between the project owner and the contractor. Before entering into a target price contract, both sides will work together to define the project requirements, design, pricing and risk through a Development Phase. The Development Phase of the project is expected to last approximately 24 months, with construction to begin afterwards. 

As a whole, the contract provides for the design, construction, supply and operation of three kilometres of twin tunnels underneath Pape Avenue between the Gerrard tunnel portal and the Don Valley bridge, two underground stations (Pape and Cosburn), two tunnel portals, three emergency exit buildings and a rail switch/crossover in the section of tunnel near Sammon Avenue. The Pape Station connection will interface with Toronto Transit Commission Line 2 subway and related works. 

FCC Construcción has been present in Canada for more than 25 years. In 1998, it was awarded the construction, operation and maintenance project for the Fredericton-Moncton Highway. In 2011, it was awarded a section of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway extension, the first modern underground subway infrastructure project in the city. This project was completed in 2018. 
This new contract, together with the GO Rail Expansion-On Corridor Project and the Scarborough Subway Extension Stations, Rail and Systems Project reinforces FCC Construcción’s presence in the Canadian market.
