FCC Construcción wins the contract to extend the Málaga Metro

FCC Construcción has won the contract to extend the Málaga Metro to the city's new hospital. The contract is worth more than 46 million euros and has a completion period of 36 months.

The section awarded is 653 metres long, completely underground, and includes the construction of La Trinidad station. Its route connects the end of the first section (Guadalmedina-Hilera) with Calle Santa Elena and Eugenio Gross and the construction system, as in the rest of the underground route of the Malaga Metro, will be cut & cover.

The works on the second section include the construction of the infrastructure, that is to say, the building of the tunnel and the station, as well as the laying of the track and, finally, the redevelopment of the public road system for its reinstatement after the completion of the works. In addition to the three contracts for the three sections, there are another two, common to the whole route, to carry out the installations and architecture of stations, whose construction project is in the awarding phase, and for the deployment of railway signalling.

The extension of Line 2 to the area of the new hospital will cover the Bailén-Miraflores district - although on its initial route it also covers the districts of Cruz de Humilladero and Centro - which has more than 60,000 inhabitants, one of the most densely populated in the capital - the fourth in terms of registered population. It will also provide underground access to first-rate health facilities.

The extension is expected to have an annual demand of between 3.5 and 4 million users, and will bring the total number of passengers on the entire network to 21 million a year.

FCC Construcción has proven experience in the design and execution of urban rail transport infrastructure. It has led the development of a large part of the extension of the Madrid Metro, line 9 of the Barcelona Metro, line 1 of the Málaga Metro, as well as lines 1 and 2 of the Panama Metro, lines 2 and 4 of the Lima Metro (Peru), the red line of the Doha Metro (Qatar), the Athens Metro, line 5 of the Budapest Metro and lines 4, 5 and 6 of the Riyadh Metro (Saudi Arabia), among other metro lines.
