The wastewater treatment plant extension and sludge incinerator construction project in Glina, Bucharest, wins the Quality Award from the Romanian Association of Building Contractors
The project to enlarge the wastewater treatment plant and build the sludge incinerator in Glina, Bucharest, executed by FCC Construcción and Aqualia, has won the Quality Prize awarded by the Romanian Association of Construction Contractors.
The execution of the extension and improvement works of the WWTP has been a great technical challenge, as it has been developed while the current facilities were in operation. The WWTP works included the construction of a new pre-treatment line with a capacity of 4.5 m3/s, the construction of a new biological treatment line with a capacity of 8.9 m3/s, the remodelling of an existing biological treatment line, the construction of 24 secondary decanters with a capacity of 4.5 m3/s and the extension of the existing sludge dewatering facilities.
A plant has also been built to reuse the sludge leaving the WWTP with a treatment capacity of 173 tonnes of dry matter per day. This plant will significantly reduce the total volume of sludge produced at the WWTP by means of incineration technology and will carry out an energy recovery process by generating part of the electricity consumed in the process.
With this expansion, the new treatment capacity of the plant will reach 12 m3/s, equivalent to more than 1 million cubic metres per day, with a time horizon of 2040, when the plant will treat the water of up to 2,400,000 inhabitants, the population of Bucharest and the rest of Ilfov County. This will ensure full compliance with all effluent quality parameters in accordance with current Romanian and European regulations.
In addition to treating all the wastewater, the plant will also co-generate energy by incinerating the sludge.
FCC Construcción has more than 20 years of experience in Romania and is one of the most important players in the construction of transport infrastructures.
