The FCC Construcción project, ‘remodelling of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium’, winner of the Caminos Madrid Awards for the best work of 2024

The College of Civil Engineers of Madrid has held the presentation of its 17th Annual Awards 2024. These awards recognise the work of civil engineers in economic and social development, as well as projects that modernise and make the city of Madrid and its community more sustainable.
In this edition, the award for the ‘Best Public Project of 2024’ went to the ‘Remodelling of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium’. This is one of the most innovative engineering and construction projects in the world, which has managed to respect the original 75-year-old structure. Among the most notable technical challenges is the new roof, which is made up of two main cable-stayed trusses with a span of 176 metres, four transverse trusses with a span of 144 metres and a tubular lattice structure that provides support for the roof.
The award was collected by Santiago Solari, representing the promoting organisation (Real Madrid), Jesús Mateos and Javier González, representing the engineers of the project management and the site management (FCC) and Carlos López de Ayesa, representing the project management.
Recently, the FCC Construcción project was recognised as the best stadium in the world in 2024 by the World Football Summit (WFS), the main platform for the global football industry. The award highlights the innovative features of the Santiago Bernabéu and its ambitious vision of redefining not only the landscape of sports stadiums, but also the cultural and economic fabric of Madrid.
