Reducing soil loss Maya Railway

Reducing soil loss – Maya Railway, section II

Description of the Environmental Measure

Problem detected:

As a result of the project preparation and construction stages, the topsoil cover, which is rich in organic matter, was found to potentially be directly and indirectly affected by activities on the site, which could lead to loss of its physical and chemical properties.

This situation could give rise to greater erosion and cause the degradation of ecological functions.

Solutions adopted:

With a view to reducing the loss of topsoil caused by land clearance and stripping work, a Soil Conservation and Restoration Programme was implemented when the site was being prepared. The purpose of this programme is to conserve the existing topsoil along the line. Various tasks were carried out, including collecting topsoil, building piles of the soil recovered and applying green fertiliser. Soil-conservation techniques were also put into practice during the works.

Results:

Thanks to the implementation of the Soil Conservation and Restoration Programme, it was possible to retrieve an approximate volume of 126,000 m3 of topsoil. This retrieved soil may then be used to cover embankments or for reforestation works.

These tasks to reuse materials from construction projects reduces the consumption of natural resources, thereby furthering the transition towards a circular economy.
