Reducing dust emissions Salamanca Hospital

Reducing dust emissions - Salamanca Hospital

Description of the Environmental Measure

Problem detected:

FCC Construcción was contracted to prepare and execute the Master Plan for the new Salamanca Hospital Complex (Spain). These works of consist of construction of an industrial building, the Virgen Vega car park, the medium-voltage line, the hospital admissions building, followed by the demolition of
the old clinical hospital and outpatients buildings.

During the works to demolish the old Salamanca hospital it was found that owing to its proximity to the new hospital complex it would be necessary to minimise the generation of dust during the demolition work.

Solutions adopted:

In order to minimise the generation of dust during the demolition work, strict wetting measures were implemented in the area to be demolished, using the following methods:

  • Irrigation hoses were used, pointing at the demolition area in the same direction as the wind. Thanks to the design of the demolition area, at no time were any workers present.
  • A spray cannon was used over the area to be demolished.
  • The machinery used for the demolition work was also fitted with a water-jet system.
  • Irrigation hoses were also fitted to the articulated telescopic platforms that were moved around the site, controlled from the base.

Hygiene measurements were also taken monthly:

  • Measurements have been taken of the exposure to chemical pollutants, using high-flow-rate pumps.
  • Measurements have been taken of the environmental air quality, by sampling particles in the air.
  • The noise levels at various points on the site have been measured using a sound-level meter.
  • The levels of exposure to noise at workstations were recorded, using dosimeters.

Results:

FCC Construcción assured positive results by minimising the generation of dust and release of dust into the atmosphere by implementing the proposed solutions in full.

Also, in with a view to maintaining quality levels in the monitoring and control of the demolition work, FCC holds fortnightly meetings with the Salamanca hospital's management.
