FCC Construcción wins the contract to extend Line 5 of the Madrid Metro to Madrid International Airport
FCC Construcción has won the contract to extend Line 5 of the Madrid Metro to Madrid Adolfo Suarez-Barajas International Airport (Madrid). The project, led by FCC Construcción, will extend Metro Line 5 between Alameda de Osuna station and Terminals 1-2-3 at the airport. FCC Construcción leads the consortium made up of Sacyr and Becsa, which will execute a contract worth more than 180 million euro and with a 36-month completion period.
The extension is 1.7 kilometres long and will make it possible to travel from Carabanchel to the airport without having to change trains. It will be connected to Metro Line 8, where an interchange station will be set up. This is one of the lines most in demand by users, with more than 17 million passengers a year.
Line 5 (Casa de Campo-Alameda de Osuna) crosses the city of Madrid on the northeast-southwest axis with stops in the centre of the capital and has connections with the suburban train network at points such as Acacias, Pirámides and Aluche. In this way, it would connect with Madrid airport, the third most used airport in the world last year with more than 60.2 million passengers. In addition, it would meet the demand of an important part of the more than 40,000 people who work at the airport's facilities.
At present, the airport can be reached by metro line 8, Renfe suburban line C-1, EMT city bus lines (including the Airport Express, which operates 24 hours a day) and other intercity lines that connect the terminals with different parts of Madrid.
FCC Construcción is an international benchmark in the development of metro systems, having built infrastructures such as lines 1-2 of the Panama Metro, Metro Doha (Qatar), Lines 4-5-6 Metro Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), recently opened; Line 2-4 Metro de Lima (Peru), Line 9 Metro de Barcelona, Metro Sur (Madrid), among others. In addition, the company currently maintains more than 50% of the Metro de Madrid network.
