Environmental Education Programme - Maya Railway, Section II
Description of the Environmental Measure
Problem detected:
The Maya Railway Section II project consists of building a railway line to provide passenger- and goods-transport services and interconnect five federal entities: Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas (Mexico), covering a total length of approximately 1,452 km. The section covered by this contract runs from Escárcega station to Calkini station (both in the State of Campeche), running along a total length of 235 km of main line, from kilometre point 228+000 to 463+000, following the preliminary route of the basic engineering project.
Given the complexity of a project of this size, the lack of environmental awareness of the workers and local people was making it more difficult to sustainably manage any impact the works may have on the environment.
Solutions adopted:
With a view to building environmental awareness among workers and local residents, an Environmental Education Programme was implemented as a measure to help control, prevent and mitigate any environmental impact associated with the Maya Railway project. This programme presented an opportunity to foster greater awareness and concern for the environment, at the same time as giving each individual the opportunity to acquire knowledge, values, attitudes, commitments and skills to protect their own environment.
Results:
Implementing the Environmental Education Programme has had a positive impact on workers' awareness, and they have improved their knowledge and skills to assure the sustainable management of any impact the project may have. This is particularly evident in the improved management of waste and the protection of wild plants and animals in the region.
