FCC Construcción completes the bridge over the Alberche River (Madrid) in record time

FCC Construcción finaliza, en tiempo récord, el puente sobre el río Alberche (Madrid)

The president of the Community of Madrid has inaugurated the three bridges in Aldea del Fresno that were collapsed by the DANA. One of the bridges was built by FCC Construcción in record time, specifically the bridge over the Alberche River in the municipality of Aldea del Fresno, which connects this town with the towns of Villa del Prado and Chapinería.

The three new bridges have been designed to offer the least possible obstacle to the water and thus benefit the hydraulic capacity. Therefore, they are prepared to face possible DANAS. These infrastructures now have wider traffic lanes in both directions, a pavement for pedestrians and a segregated cycle lane. The new bridges have new names: the bridge over the river Perales, at kilometre 48.7 of the M-510, will be known as the Puente del 2 de Mayo (2nd May Bridge). The one over the Alberche river, at kilometre 18.5 of the M-507, will be known as the Puente Nuevo de la Pedrera, and the one over the Arroyo Grande, at kilometre 14.9 of the M-507, as the Puente del Arroyo Grande.

The new viaduct over the river Perales consists of a 105-metre structure that replaces the 85-metre collapsed one; the La Pedrera viaduct is 203 metres long and 15 metres wide. In both cases, as they are listed as an Asset of Heritage Interest, the Community of Madrid has carried out consolidation and conservation work, safeguarding as many of the original elements as possible. In the case of La Pedrera, a metal footbridge has been installed to allow visitors to walk over the ruins of the old bridge dating from the 1920s. Finally, the Arroyo Grande bridge has doubled in length, from the original 40 metres to the current 80 metres. Before this flood, these infrastructures had an average daily traffic flow of 13,000 vehicles, approximately 10% of which were heavy goods vehicles.

The construction of the bridges that collapsed in the storm in Aldea de Fresno has received recognition from the Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos for the Best Public Service Performance 2023.
